Image deletion warning Image:Tanzania parks map.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hi! Are you sure that these images: Image:Zamia pumila 001.jpg and Image:Zamia pumila 001.jpg refer to Zamia pumila ? They seems to me more probably pictures of Zamia furfuracea ... --Esculapio 01:32, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank for your message,
I know this name by the label in front the plant. I am not sure if the name is good. Sorry.--Valérie75 15:51, 8 January 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Corallium rubrum.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you.

I have checked the it.wikipedia.org page, which refers to [1], which does not seem to have any licensing information (except a copyright notice in the HTML).Eloquence 05:28, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As far as I can tell, the "GPL" refers to the license of the gallery software and has nothing to do with the pictures.--Eloquence 05:02, 10 March 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you for providing images to the Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on the Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:

  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikipedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best use CommonsHelper
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you. Yuval Y § Chat § 22:28, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Esculapio. I guess the problem is with the latest images you uploaded here (diademed sifakas). You forgot to put them in categories. Done now (Category:Propithecus diadema). Another problem: do not use {{PD}} as it is not precise enough. In this case, I chose {{PD-author}} (see changes) and mentionned original uploader at English Wikipedia. Re: Orchids wiki images[edit]

Sorry about no tags on your creative commons images. Back then it was kind of disorganized and it was difficult to track pics. But I am tagging everything since 2008. So if you find anymore of those old images feel free to tag them. There are too many images in the database for me to track. But if I come across one now it will be tagged. Thanks for tagging them! --Cs california (talk) 11:00, 4 May 2009 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello, Esculapio!
Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Using your photo?[edit]

Hi Esculapio,

I was hoping to use your image: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Santuario_dei_cetacei.png

It will be used in a small booklet which looks at how industrial tuna fishing is affecting the populations of this fish in the Mediterranean Sea. It will not be used commercially. Due to usage of both copyrighted material (some photos were kindly donated by their photographers) and works like yours which require them to be shared alike, the booklet cannot be re-licensed as a whole.

I have clearly credited you in the photo credits, with the name of the individual license you released your work under. Would you be ok with me using your image in this way? I can send you a digital version of the booklet when it is finished.

Hope to hear from you soon,

Wietse [email protected]

Hello my friend,
As you can imagine, putting source=? in Category:Aerangidinae was a deliberate provocation.
Which lead you to put a full source ;-)
Now as your source seems very interesting, could you help me:

  • What very short name I could use for this website (maybe simply the name of the domain "orchids.co.in") ? I would like to add source=<yourShortName> in {{Genera}} and other templates to make it easier for others to provide the same source.
  • Do you know if others use it (like User:Orchi perhaps)

Best regards. Liné1 (talk) 06:22, 16 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have tried here with source=orchids.co.in. Maybe the url text is too short ?
Liné1 (talk) 06:45, 16 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello Liné1,
the page I've used as source (given to me by User:Orchi) is a reproduction of this scientific paper:
Chase, M. W., J. F. Freudenstein, and K. M. Cameron. 2003. DNA Data and Orchidaceae systematics: a new phylogenetic classification. Pages 69-89 In: K. W. Dixon, S. P. Kell, R. L. Barrett, & P. J. Cribb (eds.), Orchid Conservation. Natural History Publications, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
The web site www.orchids.co.in has just reproduced it, but I think is not correct giving to the site any authorship.
I think it would be better use Chase M.W. et al (2003) as a short quotation. --Esculapio (talk) 16:40, 16 June 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hi

We are writing a book on spices and herbs.

The title is “Krydderleksikon med urter og smakstilsetninger” (Encyclopedia of spices and herbs). Print run is 5000 copies and the book will be published in May this year. It will be illustrated with photos of all the plants.

Most of the photos are already provided for but we still miss some picture.

We have found your photo of smyrnium olusatrum on the Internet and we wonder if you kindly will let us use the photo in our book

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

Thank you.

Citrus × limettoides[edit]

Domanda.

1) del tipo di x da usare, c'è quella da tastiera e quella più larga;
2) se in effetti si debba usare la x anche nelle categorie su commons perché io so che quasi tutti i citrus sono ibridi salvo poche eccezioni ma li ce sono tante senza x di specie e non mi torna. Sbagliano loro vero? (non sono botanico);

File:Isola Femmine 027 corretta.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Using your Palenque photo[edit]

Hello - I run a digital travel guidebook company called Approach Guides (www.approachguides.com). We are writing a guidebook on Palenque and would like to use your image of the captive from the Palace's East Court. How should we attribute the photo? "Photo by: Tato Grasso" Thank you. It is a great photo!

Thanks for uploading File:Blepharopsis mendica2.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT ([email protected]). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Blepharopsis mendica2.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.
