Gozo
Flying high! Did you know that Gozo has its own Kite Festival?
Get ready to be blown away by the creativity

Kristina Cassar Dowling

Gozo is the smaller, greener, sister island to Malta and has so many buzzing events to keep us active throughout the months. The creativity and appreciation for family-fun entertainment is right up there on the Gozitan’s set of priorities and the Kite and Wind Festival is one of those very creative events to get you hyped for a fun-packed weekend.

Fill up your weekend, from the 18th to the 20th October, to get the most of this colourful activity taking place in the village of Gharb and the area around it. Kites have been entertaining the masses for years now, across cultures, and they have been used to pass on messages and measure distances in times of war, though they also have more heartwarming uses to entertain children and are sometimes used as symbolic features in sports events.

Gozo’s weekend event will celebrate these great good-vibe boosters by inviting kite makers from Malta, Germany, Japan, Poland, Portugal and many other international artisanal countries. It all kicks off on Friday the 19th where a kite building session held at the Gozo Sports Complex, inviting kids to join in on the craft sessions.

An afternoon event starting at 6.30pm, in the Gharb Square, will open the ceremony as the international display takes flight, filling the sky with colour and artistic creations. Minister for Gozo, Hon. Dr Justyne Caruana, will give her official introduction at the start of the event. To close the Friday activities, a traditional dinner will be hosted in the same square and animated with live entertainment.

Saturday’s festivities will all take place at the limits of San Dimitri, Gharb and will run from morning till evening. Head to the best spot to capture a few shots of the kites flying high up above and maybe even take your little ones to the workshops being held from 10.30am till 4pm - get them in on the action and let their creativity run wild.

All this kite-flying will get you hungry for an open air BBQ. And, luckily, the Gharb Local Council will be organising a feast for the visitors, closing off the second day with a kite flying display and open-air cinema. But they’ll be saving the best for last…you guessed it a full-on pyrotechnical firework display - Gozo style!

The last day of this colourful event will bring together all the kites prepared during the weekend workshops for an exhibition of the children’s creative efforts! This exhibition will take on the form of a competition where originality, technique and construction will be judged and evaluated; it's a friendly competition to get the creative juices flowing before the traditional San Dimitri Fair begins at 11am.

If this sounds like good fun for you, book your places for the lunches, workshops and dinners through the local council to secure your place! Also, you might want to get ahead of the game, and start planning your kite creations to wow the judges and spectators alike! Happy flying!
