History outing! Discover Gozo’s Medieval archaeology at Heritage Malta’s latest exhibition
The exhibition will run until February 2022.
Heritage Malta has just launched its latest exhibition at the National Museum of Archaeology’s Romegas Hall – and it’s all about Medieval Gozitan archaeology.
Aptly titled ‘An Island in Transition – 700 to 1700AD: The Archaeology of Medieval Gozo’, this immersive exhibition will give visitors the opportunity to view our sister island’s rich history through an archaeological lens.
“Although this exhibition focuses on Medieval times, the four case studies that are being presented – each dealing with a different aspect of medieval culture – are still very relevant today. These are maritime trade, art, the rural landscape and artisanal production”, National Heritage Minister Jose Herrera said during the exhibition’s inauguration.
Heritage Malta is also planning to set up the exhibition in Gozo throughout 2022
Nathaniel Cutajar, the Archaeology Museum’s Principal Curator, described how, in many ways, Gozo’s Medieval millennium is uncharted territory.
Turns out that no secure information about Gozo before the mid-13th century exists. Whilst after that date historical information does become slightly more available, it is only for limited aspects of social life.
This is because Gozo irretrievably lost most of its Medieval archives and artistic heritage thanks to the Turks’ dramatic invasion in 1551.
Archaeology thus plays a very important role in filling out some of these historical gaps.
Entrance to the exhibition is free of charge.
