Hello, Elizium23!
Tip: Add categories to your images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

Uploadwizard-categories.png

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks[edit]

Haha thanks for letting me know about Tin Eye. Didn't know it existed before, now found it. Will certainly make checking files easier!!--5 albert square (talk) 00:15, 9 August 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File:Spanish Empire in 1581.png[edit]

File:Iberian Union Empires.png has PUBLIC DOMAIN, do you know that means? --LTblb (talk) 01:42, 4 November 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Not your right to claim it as your own and copy-paste a new version onto Commons. That is still plagiarism, look it up. Perhaps you should go through the correct channels to get the files moved if you feel they are misnamed. Elizium23 (talk) 03:09, 4 November 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Your protest has no place, because the images are different. One speaks about a Union Iberica (point of view Portugal-centric) and my image is about the Spanish Empire, beacuse Phillips II of Spain sends Fernando Álvarez de Toledo as Viceroy of Portugal in 1580... These views are quite different. Only are two very different images with a common origin.--LTblb (talk) 13:15, 4 November 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

[edit]

Elizium23, I have noticed that you marked the Augustinian Orders emblem as copyrighted and that came from a website.

The logo is property of the Order, but it has been released to free use, including remixing, as long it is attributed to us.

The website that you linked took the logo (I do not know from where) and posted on their website, but it is not their property. I can give faith of this since I am a member of the Order myself and the image I uploaded came from our Archives and not from "Catholic News Agency".

I think we could instead put the file as a regular delete request instead of a speedy one, so we can have time to discuss the issue. Best,

--Kaklen (talk) 09:21, 5 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You will need to go though COM:OTRS to release copyright of the logo if it is yours. Elizium23 (talk) 09:27, 5 June 2020 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question about deleted pictures[edit]

Why you deleted my pictures? The pictures I have uploaded were lifted from my own profile on Facebook. What violation could this be? I marked the pictures as my own work. What more you want? Maybe I should sign them with my own blood or something? I feel offended by such an attitude. I have no longer desire to edit in Wikipedia any more. Thank you very much for treating me as a criminal. I did not expect this as a new editor. It looks like that I had wrong expectations about Wikipedia as a place where information can be shared and improved. Thank you very much again. Best wishes.Draculav

Cardinal Gregory photos[edit]

Hello Elizium,

All three Cardinal Gregory photos are free use, per the website. So please remove your tags. Thanks. X4n6 (talk) 04:06, 15 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As I said on my page: " See here: "The images below are free use and in the public domain." It couldn't be more clear." So what is your basis for restoring the tags? X4n6 (talk) 05:04, 15 January 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

(former) User:BedrockPerson[edit]

Greetings Elizium: I blocked them for uploading unfree files after warnings. A quick look at their talk page, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:BedrockPerson and too many images uploaded on our deletion pages/copyvios and they got blocked. I don't do very many blocks - usually only for long-term problem people who have made too much work for our good volunteers. Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 02:57, 13 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sorry to have been out of communication, I really wrecked my leg and have been unable to sit at computer until today. Ellin Beltz (talk) 02:58, 13 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi Ellin. Thanks for the note! I'm sorry to see you haven't been feeling well; hope you get better. Elizium23 (talk) 06:27, 13 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Commons-emblem-issue.svg
File:SDCC 2017 - Eden Sher (35758159240) (cropped).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

locked sockpuppet[edit]

I think you forgot the 'blocked' part. He's not blocked Trade (talk) 02:23, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The sockmaster is blocked, and this is a troll, and we should not be feeding trolls. Elizium23 (talk) 02:25, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Trade I noticed that the account is now globally locked according to Meta admins. Also the sockpuppet has restored the disruptive and off-topic edit I removed, and formatting has been "fixed up" by a good-faith editor, implicitly approving the off-topic edit. I will not be edit-warring on this. I have no particular interest in this dispute in the first place. Elizium23 (talk) 03:41, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Brianjd I would suggest that since the sockmaster was blocked and locked, and their talk page access has been revoked, the object of the block was to silence their contributions and prevent them from constantly provoking more aimless off-topic conversation in such discussions, so perhaps it's not a good idea to allow them a forum after the block. Elizium23 (talk) 03:49, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This is about the VoidseekerNZ mess and the extra section they (their sock, that is) added at the end of the DR? That extra section serves both as a small outlet for them and as notification to the community about the block etc. If other editors want to edit it to be less prominent and less ‘feed-the-trolls’, I have no objection. Brianjd (talk) 04:09, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Maybe it wasn't their sock and their account was hacked again. Elizium23 (talk) 04:11, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I don't see why a sock has to notify us of the master's block. @Yann and @King_of_Hearts have adequately mentioned the block in that thread. Everyone knew it was coming and can follow the arrow of the plot there. That discussion is about whether an image should be kept or deleted, not about a user problem. As I said, why are we validating those edits and giving "an outlet for them"??? The sock can use the sock's talk page until the sock is blocked, at any rate. Sock can ping editors just fine. It's ridiculous to grant them free rein to edit any other page, or blocking the master and globally locking the account means nothing. Nothing. Meaningless. Elizium23 (talk) 04:15, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Convenience link: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Powelliphantapatrickensis2.jpg.
I was following up on a lot of notifications here, and I think I wasn’t thinking straight by the time I got to this one. I missed the existing comment mentioning the block and thought that Brianjabberwocky was just another good faith user. I should have changed my response when I realised that wasn’t the case. I have now removed the whole section you objected to. Brianjd (talk) 05:21, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Please protect the deletion request otherwise he's just gonna get back Trade (talk) 13:32, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Trade You should make that request at one of the AN/U threads, where an admin will see it. Brianjd (talk) 13:52, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I honestly thought you were an admin given how active you are in discussions about policy Trade (talk) 13:58, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Trade LOL! I use the MarkAdmins gadget, which shows who really is an admin. Brianjd (talk) 14:04, 23 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Brianjd: perhaps you could be one of the candidates soon hehe. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 19:23, 28 January 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Re-add my license?[edit]

I saw you removed my license and authorship of several of my files (way over ten) after you reported me. Turned out, you were wrong and you were also told so. Could you re-add my license and authorship? If you find a way how to add an artist AND photographer to any file, let me know. I am trying to figure this out since quite some while and it works for one file and then the next one not. So I leave it for the others who know better. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 10:39, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I'm sorry and I know I did the wrong edits on many files, but frankly I don't know how to fix this correctly, and I'm recusing myself from this dispute because it's too nuanced for me to understand. License claims are a legal issue and so I'm not going to step into it further. Anyone can edit these files, so it should not be difficult to find an expert who can repair them with proper care. Apologies. Elizium23 (talk) 16:54, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I fixed the licenses by reverting/undoing your edits. If you do something that is not correct and notice it next time, you can just press undo. I wanted to show you in a diff how to perform an undo/revert, but then I saw you already know that. All fixed now, don't worry and enjoy commons! Paradise Chronicle (talk) 20:08, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Due to my poor understanding of the licensing issues and the legal ramifications, while I admit that my edits may have been wrong, I also maintain that undoing them may be equally wrong, and so that is why I was unwilling to uncritically undo everything. I am sorry that you took this to mean I don't understand how to use a wiki, but I think you've been disabused of that notion already. Elizium23 (talk) 20:17, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It would be like restoring unsourced material on a regular Wikipedia project. The onus of the claims rests upon the person who adds them. I would be unwilling to re-add your authorship and license claims in light of the murkiness going on. Since you have added them yourself, I can claim no issue with this turn of events. Elizium23 (talk) 20:19, 1 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I was able quickly to find a source for at least most of this, except the earliest and latest part of the history. I don't know where Publichall got the info about the two-phase construction (probably close study of primary sources, as I said they generally knows what they're doing). The current name of the building and the fact that Central Loan is no longer there are not the sorts of things for which anyone on Commons normally cites; if you care, there are probably over a dozen real estate sites that would confirm that sort of thing. - Jmabel ! talk 03:14, 16 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Infobox languages[edit]

Hi, It seems you know Italian, but your infoboxes do not show that? Could you explain? Thanks, Yann (talk) 23:03, 18 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Sure, I'm not really going to put infoboxes of every Romance language I can understand. I'm more or less polyglot. I spent a month in Catalonia mostly reading Catalan. I learned Spanish in high school and went from there. I can also understand some Sanskrit, Greek, Russian, etc. I'm not so good with CJK, though. I can understand Hebrew but not the script, yet.
For everything else, machine translation is fine. Thanks for your concern. Elizium23 (talk) 23:06, 18 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
In this particular case, I'm making an effort for our Roman friend that he natively understands what is going on. This is a particularly Italian-centric topic area, after all, right? Elizium23 (talk) 23:09, 18 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I was away from home and unfortunately missed the discussion. I watched Livioandronico2013 last year and this is what I found:

KingPhoto is a sockpuppet too.

All of these accounts and IP addresses are used exclusively for pushing cross-Wikipedia Livioandronico's (and his sockpuppets) photos (including some low quality ones), even when the existing ones are actually better.

Still more dishonest, they are also used to nominate and get double votes on their own pictures. This is how the pictures got "Featured" and Quality picture" status.

It is *irresponsible* to continue to promote them. Thank you for trying to put an end to it. —Cote d'Azur (talk) 11:58, 19 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Cote d'Azur, I wonder if the law of en:Streisand effect can be modified for such cases. Elizium23 (talk) 23:47, 19 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi, Since you withdrew the DRs, you can close them as well. Thanks, Yann (talk) 23:14, 19 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Happy to oblige; you directed me to the Batch Tasks gadget, but DelReqHandler appears to be admin-only. I can manually close the five discussions... Elizium23 (talk) 23:23, 19 February 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
