What do Gozitans think of the proposed Gozo tunnel? 7 locals share their thoughts
The proposed Gozo tunnel has been quite the hot topic locally during the last months. Questions concerning the impact on traffic and Gozo's identity as a slower-paced island, as well as environmental concerns have been raised, and in our view, quite rightly. But what do the Gozitans think? It will affect them most of all. Here are 7 views.
Arguments for
1. Simone, 49 (salesgirl) says, “I am in favour of the tunnel, but the project management aspect has to be crucial. The design should not be a one-carriage lane but needs to have at least two lanes in order to make it more efficient.”
2. Rachel, 34 (manager) wholeheartedly says, “with no doubt I 100% agree with the idea! It is definitely needed.”
3. Martina, 21 (student) expresses, “considering the hours wasted waiting either in the queue or for the wind to calm down so that the ferry ride will be less bumpy, yes, I 100% agree with the connection bridge between Gozo and Malta.”
Arguments against
1. Paul, 50 (draughtsman) says, “I would prefer if the money going towards it would be invested in Gozo and a fourth ferry, as really and truly, a tunnel won’t really fix anything.”
2. Andrew*, 54 (technician) believes “Gozo's identity will change and become just like other towns in Malta. As opposed to a tunnel, a fast ferry service may be better.”
Undecided
1. Eman, 21 (student) says, “I agree with having another solution and not just the ferry. The tunnel should be constructed because when the ferry doesn’t operate, we are stranded." He also says that while he thinks “it might help Gozo, the island might change as a culture and become like any other town in Gozo.”
2. Samantha*, 51 (secretary) says, “something has to be done, especially for all those who study or work in Malta to facilitate their commutes. However, maybe an eco-train could be introduced to travel through the tunnel as opposed to cars, to safeguard the environment as well as Gozo’s identity.”
Recently, the Association of Gozitans Employees working in Malta (AGEM) expressed its concern about the proposed method, which relies heavily and exclusively on vehicles. The AGEM suggested a possible implementation of a metro system that is more eco-friendly and will certainly reduce waiting time. The association encouraged authorities to carry out future studies for a more collective decision to be taken.
