Cathedral of the Assumption
It-Telgħa tal-Belt, Rabat, Gozo
Church

The Cathedral found upon entering the Citadel is hard to miss when visiting the old silent city of Gozo. The statues of Pope Pius XI and Pope John Paul II welcome visitors on the steps leading to the entrance of the Cathedral.

It houses Baroque architecture, designed by a Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafa, and a belfry containing five bells at the back of the Cathedral which many find unusual. Having the ground plan in the form of a Latin cross, the Citadel Cathedral lacks a dome. However, this Cathedral is well known for its impeccable art and design, especially the trompe l’oeil masterpiece painted in 1739 giving the impression of a dome with its impeccable use of the chiaroscuro technique.
