Malta’s capital city is celebrating quite the anniversary today – 450 years since becoming the islands’ capital city. Congrats!
As we all know, Malta actually had a different capital city before the current Valletta, which was the Silent City of Mdina. But on 18th March 1571, Valletta took on the prestigious role and has occupied it ever since.
The city is actually recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as it boasts incredibly history spanning centuries from the Knights and baroque, to war days and modern times. Valletta has seen it all, with renovations taking place to rejuvenate the city over the years.
And while right now the streets are empty as Malta experiences a quasi-lockdown, they’ll definitely be flocked with locals and tourists alike once the pandemic buggers off.
