Kim Vella

Tucked away underneath Qrendi’s Lourdes Band Club, one can find a time capsule filled with memories from the past.

This historic World War II shelter is packed with wall carvings, old gadgets, and some unique natural phenomena.

Gadgets

Facebook page ‘The Curious Explorer - Revealing Malta shared an extensive collection of photos of this site.

Some of the images also show crosses engraved directly onto the shelter walls which date back to 1942!

Back in 2020, explorer Conrad Neil Gatt shared a video of his experience exploring the shelters and have viewers an unprecedented look into this time capsule.

He even came across a couple of private access doors that once led directly to the houses of those who would pay extra to have easier access in an airstrike.

Perhaps the most exciting parts of the shelter are the stalactites that decorate the ceilings. These natural wonders were formed by the precipitation of minerals from water dripping through the ceiling.

The shelter’s stalactites started forming once the shelter shut its doors, meaning they’ve been forming for about 70 to 80 years!

Want to check this site out for yourself?

You’re in luck, as even though there are quite a number of shelters in the area, this is one of the few that is open to the public!

Will you be visiting this unique shelter?
