Located under a private house, the small cavern was discovered in 1924. The little gem was discovered as the house’s owner at the time was digging up a well.
The Xaghra site is an excellent display of the Maltese rock formations as it contains various stalactites and stalagmites that range from 25 centimetres to a metre. Most of these speleothems resemble animal shapes such as a tortoise and a giraffe. All of which are illuminated with artificial lighting. The cave was extended during the Second World War as it was used as a shelter.
