The Tritons’ Fountain, a national landmark that is synonymous with Valletta, has just turned 63 years old. 

Having been officially opened in 1959, the Tritons’ Fountain underwent some serious restoration works in 2017, only to be re-opened around a year later. 

To mark this special occasion, local history page Malta Audio Visual Memories uploaded some nostalgic footage of the Triton fountain dating back to the 50s.  

Amongst other things, the footage shows the iconic fountain standing without any flowing water, dozens of people donning 50s apparel, and a couple of excited onlookers climbing into the fountain as the water starts flowing.  

Located right outside Valletta’s City Gate, this fountain consists of three mythological Tritons holding up the platter from which water flows out. 

Despite the fact that the three Tritons are all looking at different directions, all of their faces are visible when the fountain is viewed from City Gate.  

The fountain’s extensive 2017 rehabilitation saw the three figures restored to their original blue colour.
