‘I have seen all types of clients’ – Valletta's Miceli Store owner looks back on ironmongery's 51-year history
The characteristic Valletta shop had first opened back in 1971.
In a recent interview with The People of Malta, Valletta’s Miceli shop owner, Pietru Pawl emotionally divulged the shop’s history.
Pietru Pawl started off by explaining how the ironmongery shop was one amongst a whopping nine but now there are only three stores left.
The shop was originally owned by Pietru Pawl’s uncle when he first opened it back in 1971. He has worked there ever since the shop was first opened but then soon took over after his uncle.
“I have seen all types of clients and still do. It is through this shop that I have learnt how to speak in English and even a little Italian because even tourists frequent it”, he revealed.
Pietru Pawl took the customer is always right rule to a whole new level. “I was happy to suffer myself to make sure that clients are served”, he continued.
“I was too good and have been cheated out of a lot of money. I trusted and people abused of that trust. That is my only regret”, Pietru Pawl added.
However, even though he never managed to save cent, he’s still happy to have “lived, brought up a family” through the shop while still managed to spend good times with his family.
The shop has evolved throughout the ages and is now also a point of reference for meeting points.
“It is not the first time I have heard people say: ‘Shall we meet next to Miceli Store?’”.
Many soon flooded the comments showing their love for the shop and what great service they have always received whenever they went to the shop.
