IN PHOTOS: Comino's disused electric substation tells a story of past progress
There’s more than the Blue Lagoon on our little island

The commodity known as electricity is a huge benefit to daily living and most times we take it for granted. The year 1882 saw Malta’s first taste of electric lighting - where during the opera Un Ballo in Maschera at the Royal Opera House in Valletta, the crowds were stunned by the modern technology! Piazza San Giorgio also got its spot in the limelight that year - change was coming to Malta! But the rest of the Maltese cluster wanted this commodity in their lives too.

A power station was built in Gozo during the period of 1925 and 1931. The Power Station in St Domenica Street, Victoria was inaugurated in 1926 and things improved from there on. But of course further enhancements to the service needed to take place. Over the years, the supply of electricity improved and in 1954 Comino was to get a taste of this brightness.

The North of the island of Malta wanted this electric service to reach their homes too, so Comino became a major connection point: with two submarine cables - from Mtarfa to Comino and Comino to Gozo - laid in 1957. Comino’s Electric Substation was coming into full effect, creating better service and connectivity to the islands. This site is currently out of use due to further improvements in the system but, boy, is it a stunner.

Something tells me a quick trip to Comino is in order - not only for the wonderful garigue and glorious hues of the Blue Lagoon, but for the antiquity of the substation. Definitely worthy of a few Instagram highlights!
