Valletta is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in all of Europe.

Malta is usually painted as the ideal summer destination, but without a doubt, wintertime is equally magical. And whilst there are plenty of fun things to do across the Maltese islands, a visit to the historic capital should definitely be at the top of your list!

Therefore, we have gathered a list of the top 10 activities to do while in Valletta, so you can make sure to have the best time possible discovering this 457-year-old city!

1. Eat pastizzi

It’s a crime to visit Malta and not try a traditional Maltese pastizz or two. This local delicacy can either be filled with ricotta or mashed peas and it feels like a bite from heaven.

2. Wander the streets of Valletta

Valletta greatest assets is probably its picture-perfect streets that are filled with history at each and every corner. So, forget Google Maps and let yourself get lost while admiring every beautiful thing Valletta has to offer.

3. Republic Street

Whether through buskers entertaining everyone who passes by or whether you’re in the mood for some good coffee and a bit of shopping, Republic Street has everything you want and more.

4. Triton Fountain

Situated right before you pass through the doors that lead to Valletta, this grand fountain is truly something to behold. Bonus, if you go at night, it perfectly lights up, making it more beautiful than ever.

5. St John's Co-Cathedral

There are a few churches in this world that execute the grand Baroque style as great as this one. Housing paintings from art legends like Mattia Preti and Caravaggio, this co-cathedral is an absolute must on every visit to Valletta.

6. Grandmaster's Palace

Used as the official office for the President of Malta, this palace is filled with grandiose rooms, all narrating Malta’s rich history.

7. Fort St. Elmo

Located at the very far edge of Valletta, this fort has seen battles and wars that we can now only imagine. It’s largely known for its role in the Great Siege of Malta in 1865 and now is also home to National War Museum, housing some impressive artefacts from all the wars Malta has been involved with.

8. Valletta Waterfront

The Valletta waterfront is home to some of the best views on the island. It also houses some incredible restaurants and bars and is perfect for all the family to enjoy. You’ll even get to see cruise liners as they leave or enter the Grand Harbour.

9. Ride a Maltese Gondola

As you’re already down by the waterfront, why not ride a Maltese style gondola and cross to the opposing but equally beautiful city of Birgu? You’ll definitely be getting the perfect picture for your Instagram feed!

10. Hastings Garden

If you’re looking for a place to rest, this public garden sporting views of Floriana, Sliema and Msida is the perfect spot for some peace and quiet.
