Cycle past the traffic and fall in love with Malta’s coastal roads.

Need another reason to fall in love with the island? Spend some time biking around Malta’s scenic hills and valleys as you get up close and personal with this island’s beautiful terrain.

Cycling allows you to cover some considerable ground whilst keeping you as close as possible to Malta’s bustling fishing villages, beautiful bays, and historic sites - all whilst helping you stay healthy!

So, in case you’re looking for a couple of reasons to bring out your biking boots and head out for a ride, here are five of the most scenic cycling routes around the Maltese islands.

1. Blue Grotto to Dingli

We’re starting off with a pretty challenging route that will reward you with unmatched coastal views of Filfla and Dingli Cliffs. Worth it.

Rather than taking the easy way out and just riding along the main road we’ve mapped out quite the challenging route taking you past the lesser known roads of the Dingli countryside.

Time: 1 hour 26 minutes

Distance: 20km

2. Victoria Lines

It would be worth reading up about this iconic site before heading off on your bike ride. Apart from the fact that the Victoria Lines practically oozes history, this structure will guide you around countless view points across Malta.

The route we have mapped starts off from Gharghur and will take you all the way to Mgarr.

The one and a half hour route provides gorgeous views of the islands from the Victoria Lines high points spinning over the 13.5 meter stretch.

Time: 1 hour 28 minutes

Distance: 21.7km

3. Xemxija to Għajn Tuffieħa

Though relatively short, this route will undoubtedly get you sweating! For a quick pit stop, you can even choose to head down to the beach, rinse off, and indulge in a well-earned ice cream - you deserve it.

This route is pretty perfect for a family outing, offering relatively level paths.

Time: 43 minutes

Distance: 10.3km

4. Mgarr, Malta

Mgarr is best known for two things: its juicy strawberries and unforgiving hills. This challenging bike ride will show you around the village’s lush fields, all whilst keeping you a stone’s throw away from the beach.

Time: 37 minutes

Distance: 6.8km

5. Tas-Sanap Cliffs

Though not as popular as their Maltese counterparts in Dingli, Gozo’s Sanap Cliffs are home to some of the best viewpoints on the islands.

This route will take you past some of the most picturesque sights on the island. Starting from Dwejra - the Azure window’s resting place -  down to Ta’ Cenc Cliffs, Sanap Cliffs, and back up to Wardija point.

Time: 1 hour 56 minutes

Distance: 23.5km
